Museum of Pixelated Industrial Design

One of the things that I miss the most from school is taking the History of Industrial Design class. In an effort to remind myself and share the great designs and designers with others, I started creating pixelated interpretations of iconic designs from the history to post on my Instagram page with little nuggets of information around each piece.

It’s been said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Copycat, designed by @MichaelAnastassiades for @Flos_northamerica, is a table lamp with two spheres joined together. The small sphere, machined out of solid aluminum and 24k gold plated, mimics the large hand blown glass sphere to stand gently balanced on a table.
Stackable Champ stool designed by @visibility_office for @matterstore. When stacked for storing, the three legs form a graceful and graphic upward spiral.
Charles and Ray Eames designed a plywood toy/furniture elephant for children in 1945, which never went into production and only one prototype was made to be displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946. Today, the Eames Elephant is available from @Vitra in plywood or colorful plastic.
Cast iron Trinity Incense Burner by @ChenandKai references ancient Chinese vessels with feet. Three bowls are merged into one form to create different receptacles for a candle, a stick, and a cone.
@Nintendo Switch is a hybrid gaming console unveiled in 2016. The device is primarily designed as a home console to be used with a dock, connected to a tv. In the alternate mode, the device can be removed from the dock and be used as a portable gaming device.
Congratulations to @bradascnyc and @mitabdesign for winning an @interiordesignmag Best of Year award! Ascent is a configurable lobby and airport seating designed by Brad Ascalon in 2017 for Mitab. The design highlights the soft, organic seats by contrasting with a monolithic base. Designed for users in mind, the base houses charging ports while doubling as a table surface for personal belongings.
Groa is a 3d printed planter by @ElkwoodProducts, recently launched by a New York frog! Elkwood is a home furnishings and design company that combines home goods with 3D printing.  They are offering 10% discount this weekend with the code “FirstTimer” to those who support.
@Vitra is producing the Eames House Bird in white as limited edition from November 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018. The Vitra version of the lacquered alderwood bird is reproduced from a 3D scan of the original Appalachian folk art (circa 1910) that Eames couple highly treasured.
Monkey side table designed by @JaimeHayon is made of solid architectural concrete. As part of the Gardenias collection from @BDBarcelonaDesign, the whimsical table doubles as a sculpture, both indoors and outdoors.
@Google Pixel Buds, revealed yesterday, are equipped with Google Assistant and can give you real-time two way translations when paired with Google’s Pixel phone. "They let you connect with the world around you in a more natural way by rethinking how headphones should work” - Juston Payne from Google
Press by @PhilippeMalouin is made from a single metal tube, pressing one end and polishing the surface to create a mirror. "As all steel tubes will have slight differentials in their composition, there will not be one item that will press and deform the same way as another” - Philippe Malouin.
@Othr__ prints Nest, a 3d printed coin bank, designed by @McGregor_McGregor_Inc. Each Nest coin bank is produced on demand as numbered editions, in porcelain and steel. “We love the simplicity and balance between ball and ring; one needs the other practically and aesthetically to complete the story. Together, the two pieces create the sense of a literal nest egg, to collect change and be smashed when full.”
Tom Dixon launches BUMP borosilicate vessels at Maison & Objet in Paris. Handmade, doubled walled vessles play with varying transparency in pink and black layers, constructed with different volumes of cones, tubes, and spheres.
Happy 10 year birthday, iPhone!
1 Inch armchair designed by @Jasper.Morrison for Emeco is constructed with recycled aluminum pipes. The name comes from the dimension of the square pipes, having 1" by 1". ”I’m more and more interested in working towards designs which take part in everyday life as naturally as possible. The 1” chair, though far from spectacular, is intended to be an updated Emeco solution to a wide variety of situations where something strong and less flashy is required." -Jasper Morrison
